Q#6 What does the Bible call our Human Nature?

QuesBThis sinful Human Nature we inherited at birth was eternally destined for conflict by the sin of Adam (not Eve, mind you, for the male is responsible for his family’s actions).  God’s Word calls it by 3 names, all having sorry countenance :-(.

  • The Old Man (Romans 6.6 KJV)
  • The Carnal Mind (Romans 8.7 KJV)
  • The Flesh (Galatians 5.17)

These all have their “possible” counterparts for the Believer:  “the New Man”, “the Mind of Christ” and “the Spirit.”  However, a choice must be made to appropriate these counterparts.  More on this later!

Captain Reginald Wallace, the author of “The New Life” book, from where the majority of these notes come, likes the term “Flesh”, so we will use “Flesh” to describe our nature, our description at birth.

The “Flesh” we are talking about is NOT our skin, muscles and organs.  We will call that our “body.”  That body is holy unto the Lord, is the Temple of the Holy Spirit and is to be presented to God as an instrument of righteousness.  However the “Flesh” is actually a principle that reveals our Fallen Human Nature, but since this principle exists in everybody, is it really a problem?  That leads us to our next Question.

Next, Q#7: What’s wrong with the Flesh?
